Play delivers special holiday message
Media Release: Dec 11th, 2008
By: Chris Clay
The emotional story of a family in deep despair due to the death of the father is being presented this weekend at Mississauga Secondary School.
The Christmas Reunion, written and directed by Kim Thomas, takes to the stage on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free. Show time is 7 p.m. both nights.
The play follows family members as they struggle to deal with the painful death of the patriarch on Christmas Eve. Memories of loss and anger lead to hurt feelings, which begin to fragment the previously close-knit family.
However, through personal introspection and deep faith, the family overcomes the grief to once again experience love, hope and redemption.
"This original play was written to deliver a relevant message to a world bombarded with materialism at Christmas time," Thomas, who heads the Fletcher's Meadow Secondary School arts department, writes in the program. "It's intended to inspire people during a season where many are faced with loneliness, depression, anxiety, worry and despair. The message in this play will open your eyes and encourage you to make a difference in someone's life this Christmas. You will be challenged to reunite with your family and friends and to give the gift of love, a gift that transcends time, season, distance, race, culture and more."
Diane Clemons, wife of Toronto Argonauts CEO Michael "Pinball" Clemons, is involved in the show and will sing a song to introduce the Saturday performance. The couple used to live in Mississauga.
"This play hits home for me and I'm honoured to be in it," said Diane Clemons.
Play organizers also invited special guest Ray Robinson to perform as Shaun. The gospel artist, who has appeared at the Apollo and has several videos in rotation on MuchMusic, will also sing.
Also singing is contemporary gospel vocalist Dean Bridgewater.
The show is presented by Kingdom House Christian Centre, a Brampton-based ministry.
Some two dozen at-risk youth have been invited to the shows.
